Carol Lem as Teacher

A Teaching Poem

(with a little help from Rumi)
A teacher asks the Buddha,
Why is it I have all this work to do?
Papers gather on my desk like winter leaves.
It’s a trance, this attention to the written word.

The Enlightened One replies, Read every essay
as you would a face with worry lines
across the brow. Don’t frown back.

Compassion is one of the qualities of a buddha.
It’s practice. Write a poem about your most
secret self and let the student’s eye gaze upon it.
See how the tables turn.

Be that considerate.
Sit with a quiet heart.
Become still. Then respond.

A student is like a plant
that needs sun and a lot of space
in which to grow.
