- A teacher asks the Buddha,
- Why is it I have all this work to do?
- Papers gather on my desk like winter leaves.
- It’s a trance, this attention to the written word.
- The Enlightened One replies, Read every essay
- as you would a face with worry lines
- across the brow. Don’t frown back.
- Compassion is one of the qualities of a buddha.
- It’s practice. Write a poem about your most
- secret self and let the student’s eye gaze upon it.
- See how the tables turn.
- Be that considerate.
- Sit with a quiet heart.
- Become still. Then respond.
- A student is like a plant
- that needs sun and a lot of space
- in which to grow.
